For a good start

Do you know what (among other things) I have learned by conducting coaching sessions? That most of us sometimes need really little to move forward, to realise postponed plans or dreams. This little thing is giving yourself time to stop, look at where I am and what I need.
This winter after Christmas time with the breath of the ending year on your back and the vision of the New Year can be an ideal moment for that.
I know, I know, some of you will think – as in, physical activity after the Christmas menu, hunting for New Year sales, opening new projects at work. Yes, that’s right, the same as the end of the year, the May weekend, pre/post holidays, new tasks at work – if there is never a right (read: perfect) moment then maybe at the same time there is always a right moment? For what is important?

With this kind of pause, I recommend to you a tool that I am happy to use in coaching and that I strongly encourage you to use – the wheel of life. The wheel of life enables you to visualise your level of satisfaction in the most important areas of your life. In the standard version, it is 8 defined values that are essential for leading a fulfilling and balanced life. As a coach, however, I always suggest to clients that they define for themselves what is most important to them – we are different, at different points in our lives, we define reality in our own language. Example categories are family, finances, friends, working life, personal development, relaxation, health, independence, sense of security, art.

For each area, we determine the level of satisfaction - usually on a 10-point scale.

In my practice I see how often just stopping and visualising gives great awareness and empowerment, how it allows us to see where the source of power and satisfaction is, which places call for our attention and thus take the first step. In-depth work with the wheel involves answering detailed questions, such as: Which values evoke the most emotion and why? Does anything surprise you? What would have to happen to have a score of 10 everywhere? Change, in which area would have the most power to change the others? These are just examples of questions that I ask my clients and that you can ask yourself by analysing the wheel.
You can use the wheel to see life as a whole, professional life, health, look at managerial competence – it depends what is most relevant at that moment.

You need a piece of paper, something to write on, time and … courage. As Brené Brown says: “There is no other way to courage than to dare.”
And that is what I wish you and myself in 2024!
